Rob Kurkut opened his namesake shop near Calgary’s design district in March, as a culmination of 20 years’ experience in interior design retail and a lifetime of collecting antiques. The historic 1912 building is the best setting for the boutique’s vintage European wares.
Kurkut’s taste is pleasingly eclectic, from the synthetic stag head that greets visitors to a stunning Belgian chair from the early 1900s, complete with original tapestry. “Nothing exactly matches — the antiques aren’t all from the same period — but it still feels purposefully collected,” he says. The handsome selection of furniture, both vintage and new, includes a 10-foot-tall carved-oak cabinet from Belgium, contemporary floor lamps and a bold, black-and-white-striped sofa.
